Very difficult to understand and the voices were not in sync with the actor’s mouths. I suppose you get what you pay for. For $13.49 it would have been a great deal had it been higher quality!

Not sure I understand all the negative being written here by a previous reviewer. This product has nothing to do with season 5, it’s a compilation of episodes only. It does not replace some other listing. As for what it is, it’s heart-warming episodes at a great price. Peronally, I enjoyed it.

I’m delighted that George Pal’s “Conquest of Space” has been released on DVD. Of course, I am a “baby boomer” who loves science fiction movies from the 50s–in fact, I have an interest in the whole history of sci-fi/fantasy films. It’s possible that younger viewers, used to the current technological wizardry in film, will find “Conquest” dated and slow. If they give it a chance, though, there is much to enjoy.

After the spectacular “When Worlds Collide” and “War of the Worlds”, George Pal returned to the almost “semi-documentary” style of his first big feature, which heralded the 50s sci-fi boom, “Destination Moon”. Stationed above the earth in a huge, wheel-shaped space station, a group of astronauts prepare to fly a spaceship to the moon. They are then notified of a change in plan–the moon is no longer the target–they are to undertake a much longer, and more perilous journey to the planet Mars.

There are no big stars in this film–clearly most of the budget went on special effects. Most of the actors are quite stoic, including faces familiar to fans of vintage television–actors like Eric Fleming, William Hopper and Ross Martin. The leader of the expedition, General Merritt, is played by Walter Brooke, a no-nonsense commander who goes by the book, although he actually finds himself turning to the “good book”. He finds strength in the Bible, although it creates doubts in his mind about Man’s right to invade new worlds. Mickey Shaughnessy over-acts outrageously as Sergeant Mahoney, a stereotypical, emotional Irish American–although his performance is actually a welcome contrast to that of most of the other actors.

One other performance of note–Benson Fong plays Imoto, the Japanese member of the crew. With just ten short years since the end of the war between the United States and Japan, it is interesting and refreshing that George Pal decided on a Japanese character in this film. The message is obvious–we should put aside our past earthly squabbles–if we are to explore the vast unknown of space, we must all pull together. This is a theme that the Star Trek series was to champion later. I should add that Fong has a compelling speech about Japan’s interest, and pride, in being part of the great adventure.

The theme of science and religion not necessarily being incompatible is raised here, perhaps not entirely successfully. It is a debate that continues to this day.

For 1955, the special effects are excellent–the space station–the interstellar vehicles–the astronauts going for “space walks”–you cannot help but wonder how much this film influenced the Kubrick masterpiece, “2001″. Two renowned experts were on hand to add to the film’s authenticity–Willy Ley was one of the world’s foremost pioneers in rocketry–Chesley Bonestell was a writer and artist, famous for his paintings of other worlds and “spacescapes”. His work enhanced “Destination Moon”, and it is a major plus here. George Pal’s frequent collaborator, Byron Haskin, directs with his usual professionalism.

The DVD is gorgeous–this is a very colourful film, and the quality here, except for the occasional strident flesh-tone, is excellent. There are no extras, except a trailer.

“Conquest of Space” is now some fifty years old, but it still captures our sense of wonder about the future, and the exploration of our solar system and beyond. If your idea of a sci-fi movie is loads of action, and plenty of aliens to battle, this film may not be for you. On the other hand, if–as I said earlier–you have a more serious interest in the history of the sci-fi film, “Conquest of Space” deserves a place in your DVD collection.

This DVD version of CONQUEST OF SPACE finally treats the movie with the respect it deserves and gets FIVE stars. The anamorphic 1:1.85 widescreen image is so great, crisp, and clean it’s like watching the film in the theater for the first time. Three cheers for the technicians who did the transfer!

Never has the screen shown–before or since!–a better starscape than this picture (no, not even FORBIDDEN PLANET, 2001, or STAR WARS). The opening moments show a classic round von Braun space station hanging and spinning in space with an interplanetary vehicle parked nearby. Space has never been so black, nor the stars so scintillating. The score by Van Cleave underscores the sense of wonder–both eerie and majestic–inherent in these scenes.

I first saw CONQUEST OF SPACE when I was ten. This was at a time when our local theater ran Saturday “Kiddie Mantinees” for 25 cents admission during the ’50s when the feature was almost always a science-fiction movie. That’s how I saw INVADERS FROM MARS, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and others for the first time. As much as I was thrilled by these movies, the one that touched me the most was CONQUEST OF SPACE.

Fast forward to the ’80s and ’90s. The only VHS version of the film that I’m aware of could not be more terrible. The blacks are washed out due to the positively poor resolution of the tape. Even more disappointing, when the opening title sequence begins a few minutes after the start of the film, the image on the pan-and-scan VHS suddenly and unaccountably reduces in size so that the titles run in a foreshortened box surrounded by black bars on all sides. As soon as “Directed By” finishes, the movie jumps back to fill the standard TV screen. Since this sequence is one of the more dramatic moments in the film, this VHS version completely destroys the film makers’ intent. Fast forward again. A couple of years ago, I discovered a Japanese Laserdisc version of the movie on E-Bay. I bought the disc hoping against hope that the Laserdisc would be an improvement over the VHS. Unfortunately it is the exact same poor resolution pan-and scan version as the VHS. But all that is in the past now thanks to this practically perfect DVD, which has restored the title sequence to its original widescreen glory.

Since this is a George Pal film, the special visual effects are as good as they could get for their time. The story about a trip to Mars has many moments of spine-tingling wonder. But, due to studio interference and pressure, the script was rushed and could have been better. The depiction of the surface of Mars was dramatic and cinematically wondrous in 1954 and knocked my socks off, but has little to do with the photographs of martian landscapes that we are familiar with today from the various NASA Mars missions.

But now I’m quibbling. This DVD is a dream come true and is the best rendering of this film since its original theatrical release in 1954. For those who wish to learn more about the production of CONQUEST OF SPACE and George Pal’s other marvelous science-fiction and fantasy films, check out the out-of-print book THE FILMS OF GEORGE PAL by Gail Morgan Hickman.

This is the only large scale DVD documentary film series on the Court (currently). The analysts who provide commentary are some of the best in the nation: including professors, a journalist, a few lawyers, a previous Supreme Court Justice (Sandra Day O’Conner) and the current Chief Justice (John G. Roberts, Jr.), and law clerks who served previous Justices. As far as filmed documentaries on historical narratives, the production value of this PBS series is high: every picture and video archive was accessed and used adeptly. The one critique I have of this 4-part-4-hour series is that it is too short: there is virtually no coverage of the first part of the first amendment: religion & government. Instead, PBS offers a grand political drama which looks at economic shifts, cultural shifts, and political power plays with a focus on the U.S. Supreme Court.

On Nation Under Law

These episodes follow the development of the Supreme Court chronologically, so this episode is dedicated largely to Chief Justice John Marshall. Marbury v. Madison sets the precedent for judicial review and is a complicated case: this episode takes time to develop the background necessary to understand the essential features of the political and legal context. The summary of Marshall’s ruling is decent. The next important case is McCulloch v. Maryland is Marshall’s other important case that is covered here before moving on the Andrew Jackson’s administration and Chief Justice Taney, arguably the worst Chief Justice in the history of the Court (e.g. Dred Scott v. Sanford).

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Supreme Court! Click Here

A New Kind of Justice

This episode begins following Stephen Jay Field (nominated by Abraham Lincoln) who set a precedent for a free what one analyst called a “rootin tootin capitalism.” The Court began to defer to states on many economic issues (in contrast to Marshall’s decision in Fletcher v. Peck) and the doctrine of “liberty of contract” became central. These laissez-faire rulings by the court ran into the Great Depression, which lead to the tensions with Roosevelt’s New Deal agenda. The episode ends with Oliver Holmes, Jr. as insightful and prophetic.

A Nation of Liberties

This episode follows Hugo Black who was once a KKK member but became, as a Justice, a defender of many features of the Civil Rights Movement (I liked this approach better than if PBS just followed Chief Justice Earl Warren). Brown v. Board of Education is the central case despite Alabama’s defiant stance against the ruling. There is a visual and musical crescendo where the words of the ruling are read allowed along with the words “equal protection” that scroll across the tv screen in a transparent way with the famous picture of Nettie Hunt and her daughter Nickie sitting on the steps of the Supreme Court with a newspaper in hand that declares the ban on segregation. I fell in love with this PBS series at that moment. The cases of Gideon v. Wainwright and Miranda v. Arizona set the stage for the Nixon agenda and the Rehnquist Revolution.

The Rehnquist Revolution

This episode follows the development of the “culture war” surrounding the abortion (e.g. Roe v. Wade) debate along with the rise of Rehnquist through Nixon. Nixon wanted to be tough on crime and he thought that the Miranda case was a burden on local law enforcement; would Rehnquist eventually overrule it? No he didn’t (Dickerson v. United States). Sandra Day O’Conner is interviewed in this episode and she reiterates here defense of upholding the precedent in the Roe case along with the striking of trimester periods in her opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The analysts on this episode argue that the “Rehnquist Revolution” begins in 1994 with the United States v. Lopez case where the commerce powers of the federal congress were restricted in favor of states rights in creating laws about gun regulations near schools. Current Chief Justice, John G. Roberts, Jr. is interviewed to comment on recent court history. He says provocatively, “I’d be surprised if Justice Rehnquist’s view on a number of areas didn’t change as he moved from an associate justice to being the Chief Justice…” The last court case discussed is Bush v. Gore and the analysts presented it with ironic implications considering Rehnquist’s history of deference to the states. This 4 part series ends with Chief Justice Roberts giving us a vague, but hopeful appreciation for both the Court and the Rule of Law.

The primary holdings of some justices are emphasized: Marshall, Jackson, Frankfurther, Black, O’Connor and Rehnquist, and some others. The history and social backgroundm, and the interplay among Congress, President and Supreme Court help viewers to develop a general view of the reasoning behind their holdings.

For law students, this is a great set in the sense that you don’t need to try hard to memorize why Marshall preferred a strong national government or why Black is a strict originalist. After understanding their political view under the historical background, the answers are obvious.

Anyone who actually believes that love is a many splendored may not get their money’s worth from “Dan in Real Life.” Here’s a film that shows just how unexpected, irregular, and confusing love can be, both in terms of family and romantic interests. There’s intelligence to this story that’s equally humorous and heartbreaking, proving once and for all that love is difficult to receive and even more difficult maintain. At times, it’s also difficult to acknowledge, especially if it’s being kept a secret. The greatest difficulty of all is letting go of love, to recognize that the past is the past and to know when to move on. All this is explored in “Dan in Real Life,” a smart, witty, and touching romantic comedy that doesn’t lose itself to an overabundance of clichés. The formulaic elements are there, but they’re presented in a new way, and they’re used in a story that can actually support them. They’re not used simply because we expect them to be.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dan in Real Life! Click Here

The plot focuses on Dan Burns (Steve Carell), a widowed advice columnist living in New Jersey with his three daughters. They all drive to Rhode Island for an annual family reunion, and its there that Dan meets Marie (Juliette Binoche), a good-natured woman who has traveled the world and seen many sights. Their romance comes to a halt when Dan discovers that Marie is dating his brother, Mitch (Dane Cook). Dan spends the rest of the film struggling with his feelings, unwilling to let Marie go yet unable to be honest with his family, who he can’t seem to connect with.

As simple as this plot sounds, a number of fascinating, thought provoking elements liven things up. One of the most interesting is the relationship between Dan and his daughters. The two oldest are typical in that they hate Dan: seventeen-year-old Jane (Alison Pill) is desperate to see the world, and a great way to start would be to finally learn how to drive; fifteen-year-old Cara (Brittany Robertson) believes that she’s deeply in love with a boy from school, and she openly despises her father for not letting that love develop. At one point, she screams that he’s a murderer of love. Dan tries to rationalize the situation–Cara has only known the boy for three days, and it’s impossible to know whether or not you’re in love so quickly. Eventually, Dan begins to analyze his love for Marie, who he had only met three days earlier. His youngest daughter, Lilly (Marlene Lawston), is the least hostile, despite not understanding why her father behaves the way he does. As his love for Marie deepens, he loses track of Lilly, and he ultimately hurts her feelings by neglecting to read a special book she made for him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dan in Real Life! Click Here

Another important element is the relationship between Dan and his immediate family; because he makes himself so distant, they look at him more with concern than with love. Some feel that he needs to finally let go of his dead wife–his parents (John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest) set him on a blind date with an old family acquaintance (Emily Blunt), hoping that he’ll finally have some fun. This suits his brother, Clay (Norbert Leo Butz), just fine, since he feels that Dan should “uncork” himself. The pressure they’re putting on Dan is unmistakable, as is the fact that their actions are well intentioned but completely unnecessary. This is probably why he attempts to engage his nieces and nephews, even when they make it clear that they don’t want to be engaged.

But the relationship between Dan and Marie is the most important element. It all boils down to the fact that two love struck people are under the same roof, unable to show their feelings for each other. How long can this go on? Will anyone notice? Will either of them be able to come clean? These are the questions we find ourselves asking as the film progresses, not only because the story is entertaining, but also because we eventually realize that Dan is not following the advice in his own written columns. Dan himself realizes this when his articles are considered for syndication in a major newspaper–he has become a hypocrite, someone so blindsided by love that he didn’t think about who might get hurt by it.

Is it normal for love to be this emotionally exhausting? I don’t think I’m the right person to answer that question, which is probably just as well; a recommendation for “Dan in Real Life” doesn’t depend so much on what I think, but on the mindset you bring to the theater. This classic Boy Meet Girl fable is told in a non-traditional way, relying more on genuine emotional development than on a formulaic structure. Although it allows for the film’s one weakness–an abrupt ending–the emotional development still does wonders for the story, preventing it from becoming a bland, meaningless romantic comedy. It helps that all of the characters are believable, especially Dan; as he comes to terms with the ups and downs of life, our own humanity is reaffirmed. This alone makes “Dan in Real Life” a heartfelt, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable film.

A tired formula gets a shot in the arm by affecting performances in this quaint little film that will touch you.

I have grown to really appreciate the acting talent of Steve Carell who really can carry a film. Carell darn near stole the show in Bruce Almighty to the point where the funniest segments were cut from the theatrical release because he upstaged Carrey so much, but those scenes where fortunately made available on the DVD release. Carell was again the saving grace of Evan Almighty and The 40-Year-Old Virgin in which both most likely would have died unnoticed had it not been for his sincere performances. This comedian definitely knows how to act. Carell reminds me of the legendary Dick Van Dyke when he had serious roles or moments and Bob Newhart’s dry comedic delivery. It all just seems so effortless on Carell’s part.

In another affecting performance we have Carell as a widower raising three daughters alone and giving his tidbits of wisdom on doing so in a local column titled “Dan in Real Life.” Even though his wife has died four years ago, he has yet to really move beyond that in the way of a relationship. He has focused all his attention of his children and while that is admirable, a parent is still allowed to look out for himself too. He has not and the annual fall trip to his parents’ cabin plays out all too realistically with everyone pushing him to find someone and he does.

He bumps into a lovely woman in town that he’s immediately drawn to. She is played by the ever radiant Oscar winning actress Juliette Binoche, the only reason to see The English Patient and one who makes turning 43 seem really cool and desirable. In the hands of any other actress this role would have been blown out of portion, but in the subtle hands of Binoche, it is a delicate and balanced performance. Unfortunately, this terrific woman who seems perfect for him is, in reality, his brother’s latest flame that he’s brought down to the family cabin to meet everyone for the first time because “this one is different.”

Sadly, the effects of this are handled much like a TV-movie or a good episode of that old series “Love Boat”, or any other sitcom for that matter. What makes this film ultimately rise above that is admirable work done by the leads. These are seriously understated performances that are quite touching, believable and memorable in spite of a seriously flawed script at times.

Some of the humor in this film is both lame and predictable, but the execution is always dead on. Again, the performances are the key to this tired formula of the awkward romance. I guess this film is a good example of style over substance. Will this save this movie for everyone, no, but I think most might like this film. I doubt many will love it or even remember it much after seeing it, but it’s a nice experience in spite of it’s obvious weaknesses.

Critics are generally not very nice to movies like this one. I guess THEY didn’t grow up watching this kind of stuff and don’t have those fond memories (which explains the 4 stars). The night me and my family got cable tv in the early 80s (first ones in the neighborhood) this hilarious flick was on. Nudity on the boob tube was still something new to us. So Zapped! was just about the coolest naughty movie I’d ever seen. Watching it now is still a delight! Just silly non-sense…but awfully fun! The young lady from The Facts of Life tv show is great (and looks like my niece). Baio may be a little TOO nerdy, but he and Aames are believable friends. Plus, anything with Scatman Crothers (The Shining, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Twilight Zone: The Movie) is worth seeing. This could be the 1982 equivalent of movies like American Pie. Just leave your brain at the door, pop this in the machine and you’ll find much to enjoy on a lazy saturday afternoon. Try a triple feature with Sixteen Candles and Just One of The Guys (or Weird Science and The Breakfast Club).

NOTES: The sign outside the music store says “8 Tracks”. I feel so OLD!! Speaking of, there are at least 2 terrific songs on the soundtrack, “Got to believe in Magic”, “King and Queen of Hearts”, etc. Worth the price alone.

I don’t know why critics are so hard on this movie, sure Zapped may not be a movie that you could picture getting an Oscar for best picture but I still think it is a good movie and I have a lot of fun watching it and I think Scott Baio, Willie Aames, Felice Schatcher and Heather Thomas all are good, there is nudity in this movie but only briefly and anyone who says that there is no nudity probably saw it edited on TV, I have the movie unedited on video and there is indeed brief nudity especially near the end of the movie during the dance, I am rating this cute, funny movie a 5 and I wish it would get onto a wide-screen DVD. Don’t listen to the arty farty critics, they are a bunch of snobs who wouldn’t know a fun enjoyable movie it it came up and bit them on their butts!

The fourth season ranks, in my opinion, with the second and first as being the best (I haven’t seen season five yet), and, as there is almost universal agreement on, this set is highly recommended.

The episodes:

An Exercise in Fatality: Robert Conrad stars as a health club businessman who murders his partner and makes it look like an accident.

Negative Reaction: Dick Van Dyke plays against type as a famous photographer who kills his wife and makes it look like an ex-con committed the deed.

By Dawn’s Early Light: Patrick McGoohan stars as the head of a military academy who kills one of the school’s govenors by sabotaging a cannon on Founder’s Day, making it look like a gun cleaning accident.

Troubled Waters: While vacationing on a cruise liner Columbo must solve the murder of the singer of the ship’s band. The murderer, Robert Vaughn, sets up his alibi-he was recovering in Sick bay from a minor “heart attack.”

Playback: An inventor video tapes his mother-in-law’s murder and later plays it back to the security guard, to give himself an alibi.

A Deadly State of Mind: George Hamilton as a mesmerizing doctor who murders the husband of one of his patients that he’s involved with (Leslie Ann Warren). He then decides to kill her.

Plus a Mrs. Columbo bonus episode: “A Riddle for Puppets.”

Excuse me…just two more things:

1. Problems with the DVD is most likely an issue with your player, not the DVDs themselves. This is mostly evidenced by the thousands of copies that are watched with no problem. The DVD specification, and the huge variety of players out there guarantee some sporadic problems. Think of it as having to put a penny on the label of the 45 to keep it from slipping back when we used record players. It’s possible that your disc is defective, but unlikely.

Don’t let that potential problem stop you from watching these!

2. While I suppose some “extras” would be nice from an archival point of view, they’re not necessary. With, what, thirty or forty episodes altogether, what is there to say about each one? This is a personality-driven show, so watching it is the real treat. I often…well maybe not often, but occasionally…wonder just what it is people do with the extras? Is it really all that interesting to watch the ten minute “backstage access” special or watch film trailers over and over again? How many films really warrant a commentary track, and of those, how many are well done? A few dozen over the history of film? Maybe? I’m all for the extras, but I suspect they would be of little interest in this series, and really would exist just to give those that complain about “no extras” the ability to complain about “bad extras.”

Again, the lack of bonus materials shouldn’t keep you from enjoying these shows. Enjoy!

Here’s a list of the six Columbo segments presented in this fourth season collection:

1.) AN EXERCISE IN FATALITY. Robert Conrad stars as a health club businessman who murders his partner and makes it look like an accident. This episode is highlighted by Gretchen Corbett who plays Conrad’s sexy secretary.

2.) NEGATIVE REACTION. Dick Van Dyke plays against type as a famous photographer who kills his wife and makes it look like an ex-con committed the deed. This segment features the incredibly gorgeous JoAnna Cameron, who played Isis in the Saturday morning programs “Shazam” and “Isis” circa ‘75 and ‘76.

3.) BY DAWN’S EARLY LIGHT. Patrick McGoohan stars as the head of a military academy who kills one of the school’s govenors by sabotaging a cannon on Founder’s Day, making it look like a gun cleaning accident.

4.) TROUBLED WATERS. While vacationing on a cruise liner Columbo must solve the murder of the singer of the ship’s band. The murderer, Robert Vaughn, sets up an ironclad alibi — he was recovering in Sickbay from a minor “heart attack.”

5.) PLAYBACK. An inventor video tapes his mother-in-law’s murder and later plays it back to the security guard, to give himself an alibi.

6.) A DEADLY STATE OF MIND. George Hamilton stars as mesmerizing doctor who murders the husband of one of his patients that he’s intimately involved with (Leslie Ann Warren). He then decides to kill her utilizing his hypnotic skills.

BONUS EPISODE: Mrs. Columbo — “A Riddle for Puppets.”

The three disks are thankfully one-sided, unlike the third season collection.

I’d rate the episodes, but we Columbo fans know that they’re ALL fabulous!
